Alternative fuels are being
used today in place of gasoline and diesel fuel made from
petroleum.
Using these
alternative fuels can help our nation reduce its dependence
on imported petroleum and improve air quality. The U.S. Department of
Energy classifies the following fuels as "alternative
fuels":
Biodiesel
Electricity
Ethanol
Hydrogen
Methanol
Natural Gas
Propane
P-Series

Piedmont Biofuels
Piedmont Biofuels is a worker and member owned cooperative.
Their mission is to lead the grassroots sustainability
movement in North Carolina by using and encouraging
the use of clean, renewable biofuels.
They are involved in a wide variety of undertakings
in support of this mission:
• Provide pure biodiesel (B100) to the community.
• Provide a space where worker members can make
their own fuel from waste vegetable oil.
• Have a USDA Research Farm where we do oilseed
crop research.
• Have an elaborate glycerin composting facility.
• Do education and outreach on both biodiesel
and engine modifications that enable people to use straight
vegetable oil (SVO) as fuel.
• Lobby the North Carolina legislature, as well
as our national representatives, on behalf of biodiesel
and alternative fuels.
• Have an intern program that allows people to
live on site and learn about all facets of our operations.
They
also host a biofuels listserv that
anyone can join. Sign up for the listserv here.
