About SmartCommute@rtp

SmartCommute@rtp is The Research Triangle Park's transportation management association (TMA) that is a committee of the RTP Owners & Tenants Association. The initiative was established in 1999 in coordination with the NC Department of Transportation and today represents the efforts of 27 member employers that represent the majority of RTP's 38,000 full-time employees.  SmartCommute@rtp membership is free and voluntary and any company located within the boundaries of RTP (owners or tenants) is eligible for membership.

Mission Statement

The purpose of SmartCommute@rtp is to coordinate the transportation demand management (TDM) efforts of organizations in The Research Triangle Park to address common transportation concerns, reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality.

Objectives:

  • Promote alternate commuting practices to ease travel demand on existing roadways, facilities and workforces
  • Create and support alternative, environmentally friendly commuting practices within RTP
  • Leverage best practices among RTP organizations to create effective programs for all
  • Partner with NCDOT, local transit authorities and area municipalities for development of TDM funding, policies and services
  • Coordinate the annual regional SmartCommute Challenge campaign with Triangle Transit
