The Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program provides registered participants (commuters who regularly ride the bus, vanpool, carpool, bike, or walk) with a reliable, emergency ride home on the day the person has used an alternative mode of transportation to get to work.
Registered participants may use the program if:
- He/she or an immediate family member suffers from an illness or severe crisis
- He/she must work unscheduled overtime
- Their ridesharing driver has to stay late or leave early (their ride is not available)
Side trips are allowed on the way home (i.e., picking up a sick child at daycare/school). Each registered participant may take an ERH ride up to twice in any calendar month, but not more than six times in one calendar year. The program cannot be used for personal errands, pre-planned medical appointments, business related travel, in place of an ambulance or for non-emergency side trips on the way home.
Who can use this service?
- Your employer must be registered with the program (View the List of Registered Employers)
- Commuters must be pre-registered and live or work in Durham, Orange or Wake Counties
- Permanent part-time or full-time employees
- An alternative mode (transit, ridesharing - carpool & vanpool, bicycling, walking/running) must be used on the day the ride is needed
- There is no minimum requirement for regular alternative mode use
- Participants must be 21 years-old or over to sign a rental agreement
- Only those using alternative modes and who have a true emergency can take advantage of a free ride

For Employers
To encourage promotion of using alternative transportation, Triangle Transit requires that a commuter's employer must be registered for the ERH program. If the commuter's employer is registered for the program, then the commuter is eligible for ongoing use of the program. Employer registration is FREE so if you are not on this list, fill out the registration form.
