Sunny Outlook for Charging Stations

Jan 25, 2012

by Helen Chappell

North Carolina's first solar-powered charging stations were installed in December. In Asheville, Biowheels Responsible Transportation and their partners installed the first of four planned public solar charging installations. In Raleigh, Progress Energy and the City of Raleigh unveiled two solar stations to be used in a two-year research project.

The Asheville project was unveiled on December 11. Government officials and industry partners were in attendance to open a downtown solar installation that supports charging for three electric vehicles. When vehicles are not charging, electricity generated from the installation is fed into the grid. The stations are free to the public.

Local officials opened the Raleigh project on December 15. Two stations for the Progress Energy and City of Raleigh fleets are now connected to solar arrays; the stations will not be open for use by the public. When the charging station is not being used, the electricity generated by the solar arrays is fed into on-site batteries for later use. One of the project's partners, Advanced Energy, will collect charging and power information from the stations in a two-year project to evaluate the performance of the stations and how such stations might work with the electrical grid.

Getting Amped Up for Electric Vehicles: Statewide Plug-In Electric Vehicle Task Force

Jan 25, 2012

by Marcy Bauer

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are on their way to the North Carolina marketplace, and public and private sector leaders have been working hard to be ready for them. The PEV Task Force is collaborating to ensure that North Carolina is a leader in PEV adoption and industry development.

On the heels of a PEV Symposium in October 2011, the task force formed workgroups to develop components of a statewide PEV readiness plan addressing six key areas: Economic Development; Incentives; Vehicles; Infrastructure; Policy, Codes and Standards; and Education and Outreach. The North Carolina Solar Center is working with the N.C. Department of Commerce to lead the combined Incentives and Economic Development workgroups, whose members will work together to identify key incentives that will entice both consumers and companies to build the PEV industry in North Carolina.

If you're interested in contributing to the statewide PEV plan by joining a workgroup, you can do so regardless of whether you were able to attend the summit or initial workgroup meetings. You can also follow the project's progress on the Clean Transportation Team's PEV planning project website.

PEV related activities in NC are currently being supported by the Centralina Council of Governments Mountains To Sea Initiative, a one year U.S. Department of Energy funded project to develop the PEV roadmap.

Contact Aranzazu Lascurain at alascur@ncsu.edu or 919-515-0352 for information on joining the PEV Task Force.

Congress Fails to Extend Transit Benefit Parity

Dec 19, 2011

The Senate agreed to a 2-month extension of the payroll tax holiday. That extension did NOT include an extension of transit benefit parity. On January 1st, the transit benefit will revert back to $125/month (instead of $120) and the parking benefit will increase to $240/month (up from $230).

While the endeavor was ultimately unsuccessful, the effort itself was incredible. Bi-partisan letters with the signature of 22 Senators and 50 Members of Congress were sent to Congressional leadership. More than 50,000 letters were sent to Congress through the commuterbenefitsworkforus.com website. Additionally, scores of local and national organizations weighed in with their Members of Congress and helped spread the word. Hopefully the visibility of the commuter benefits this effort has raised will help increase the number of Americans who use the transit benefit.

Triangle Parkway Opens December 8th

Dec 07, 2011

The Triangle Parkway will open to vehicular traffic on December 8, and will be toll-free through January 3, 2012, when tolling will begin. Interestingly enough, there will be no toll booths and no stopping on the new toll road. Customers may purchase an NC Quick Pass, an electronic sticker transponder, for $5.00, saving them up to 35% on tolls. For those without an NC Quick Pass, overhead high-speed cameras will capture license plate information and bill drivers through a “Bill by Mail” process. Most importantly, the toll-road will offer some definite time savings to commuters, and once all the phases are completed, could shave 40 minutes off the commute time for some.

For more information visit, www.myncquickpass.com.

Section of NC 147 to Close September 6th

Sep 01, 2011

The N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close a section of N.C. 147 South, known as the spur, in Durham beginning Sept. 6, as part of the Turnpike Authority’s Triangle Parkway project. This spur section of NC 147 extends south of the I-40/NC 147 interchange to T.W. Alexander Drive.

All traffic traveling on N.C. 147 southbound will need to take Exit 5A (I-40 East) or Exit 5B (I-40 West) as crews construct the tie-in from the existing N.C. 147 to the newly constructed Triangle Parkway.

When N.C. 147 reopens in December, it will no longer dead end at T.W. Alexander, but will continue onto the new Triangle Parkway.

Motorists traveling southbound on N.C. 147 needing to access T.W. Alexander Drive should use the following signed detour:
• N.C. 147 to I-40 West to N.C. 55 (Exit 278) to N.C. 54 to T.W. Alexander Drive.

Motorists traveling on T.W. Alexander needing to access N.C. 147 North should use the following signed detour:
• T.W. Alexander Drive to N.C. 54 to N.C. 55 to I-40 East to N.C. 147.

Motorists traveling on I-40 needing to access T.W. Alexander Drive should use the following signed detour:
• I-40 to Exit 278 (N.C. 55) to N.C. 54 to T.W. Alexander Drive.

NCDOT and the Turnpike Authority will host a public meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 30 to provide people and businesses in the Research Triangle Park an opportunity to speak with DOT and Turnpike staff about the construction. The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the North Carolina Biotechnological Center located at 15 T.W. Alexander Drive, Research Triangle Park.

Annual Commuter Challenge Starts as Gas Prices Continue to Rise

Mar 29, 2011

Annual campaign urges Triangle residents to save green and breathe easier by changing travel habits

Research Triangle Park, NC – March 29, 2011– To address the tightness in budgets and in Triangle commuters’ chests that comes from filling up at the gas pump, this year’s SmartCommute Challenge “Breathe Easy” will focus on the benefits of changing commuting habits. With speakers that focus on the need for public transportation in the area and the premiere of new technology that will help those who drive alone shift to a smarter travel mode, the SmartCommute Kick-off on April 1st will show Triangle residents ways to cut their transportation costs by helping plan smart trips.

The 2011 SmartCommute Challenge, presented by GoTriangle and SmartCommute@rtp, is an annual non-profit public service campaign aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality in the Triangle, encourages commuters who work or live in Durham, Orange or Wake counties to pledge to ride the bus, carpool, join a vanpool, telework, bike or walk to work at least once between April 1 and June 1.

In a recent release, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) stated ‘riding public transportation saves individuals, on average, $9,904 annually and $825 per month based on the March 4, 2011 average national gas price ($3.47 per gallon-reported by AAA) and the national unreserved monthly parking rate. This is the highest savings for public transit riders in two years.’ With this type of savings out there, it’s a great time to learn how to commute in an economical way.

This year’s kick-off event is a transportation and air quality fair featuring:

  • Bicycle safety checks provided by REI staff,
  • Trip Planning tables featuring information on commuting by bike, bus, carpools, and vanpools,
  • Alternate fuel vehicles displays provided by Triangle Clean Cities,
  • Air quality information from Triangle Air Awareness,
  • Triangle Transit bus display holding an “Art in Transit” exhibit (art provided by Go Chapel Hill),
  • Sponsor tables with information and give-aways.

“With gas prices at their highest in months, many commuters are still looking for ways to save in this economy,” said David King, general manager of Triangle Transit, a member of the GoTriangle family of services and partner of the SmartCommute Challenge. “The SmartCommute Challenge gives Triangle commuters a chance to look at how they currently get to work and assess where they can make environmentally-friendly and budget-friendly changes.”

“Breathe Easy”, the SmartCommute Challenge and Air Quality Awareness kick-off will be April 1st at 9:00a.m. at the Research Triangle Park Headquarters, 12 Davis Drive in RTP.

Workshops on Expanded Bus and Rail Options Set for March

Mar 15, 2011

Research Triangle Park, N.C. –The third round of public workshops highlighting nearly a year of work researching and evaluating transit options will begin on March 22. Triangle citizens are invited to participate in these important workshops on future bus and rail projects planned for the region.

These community meetings on the Triangle Regional Transit Program (TRTP) follow sessions held in the summer and fall of 2010 and will offer citizens the best opportunity to respond to a completed technical analysis of transit corridors under study in Wake, Durham and Orange counties. Citizens are encouraged to provide their feedback prior to county leaders discussing financial options and moving forward to finalize plans.

The workshops are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the exception of the workshop scheduled for Monday, March 28, in Raleigh, which will be from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Information presented will include each county’s projects.

“Triangle Transit and our regional transit partners are wrapping up our initial work on bus and rail options. Getting the public’s input improves our ability to produce plans that meet the region’s future needs,” said Triangle Transit General Manager David King. “We hope that a healthy cross section of people who live and work in the area will lend their voices to the process.”

The TRTP workshop meeting dates and locations are:

  • Tuesday, March 22, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Raleigh - Triangle Town Center, First Floor Next to Dillard’s, Triangle Town Center Blvd.
  • Wednesday, March 23, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Durham- Durham Station Transportation Ctr, 515 W. Pettigrew St.
  • Thursday, March 24, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Chapel Hill - Friday Center, Redbud Room, 100 Friday Center Dr.
  • Monday, March 28, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Raleigh - Mt. Peace Baptist Church, 1601 MLK Jr. Blvd.
  • Tuesday, March 29, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Cary – Bond Park Senior Center, 120 Maury O’Dell Place (off High House Rd.)
  • Wednesday, March 30, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Raleigh – NC State University – McKimmon Conference Center, 1101 Gorman St.
  • Thursday, March 31, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. RTP - Research Triangle Park Foundation, 12 Davis Dr.

Representatives will be available to answer questions and share the latest information and receive community feedback on transit alignments and potential station areas in the three counties.

The Triangle Regional Transit Program website, www.ourtransitfuture.com, has more information on the corridors under study, technologies under review, videos on the transit program and online comment forms. Citizens are also invited to sign up for Facebook at (www.facebook.com/ourtransitfuture) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/TheTRTP) and read news items about the TRTP.

Additionally, individual meetings, events, the website, newsletters, as well as Facebook and Twitter feeds will be utilized to keep citizens and stakeholders informed about the project’s status and to provide an opportunity to raise issues or ask questions prior to the study’s completion later this spring.

The work is part of the Federal Transit Administration’s Alternatives Analysis process. An eventual Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) is expected. The DEIS will conduct the detailed analysis and evaluation of environmental impacts and formal public participation process required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

GoTriangle Data Warehouse Now Open

Feb 15, 2011

February 15, 2011 – Durham, NC – As riders increasingly use mobile devices and the web for transit information, today, GoTriangle.org opened an online “App Center” offering a data warehouse that will allow third-party developers to create new trip planning innovations.

The new developer resources section on GoTriangle.org is designed to encourage creation of online resources, including mobile applications, desktop applications and widgets, that improve customer access to schedule data for Cary Transit (C-Tran), Chapel Hill Transit, Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA), Raleigh’s Capital Area Transit (CAT), Triangle Transit, Duke University Transit and N.C. State University’s Wolfline. The third-party applications will be available in the App Center, where riders can download the application that works best for them.

"The Triangle is known for leading the way in technology. By providing open access in as many forms as possible, we hope local developers are able to design new and exciting ways to provide online information about all public transportation providers in the region," said David King, General Manager of Triangle Transit.

Following a simple registration process, developers can download free schedule data in General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) or GIS Shape format. File information includes stop locations, routes, trips, stop times, calendar, and calendar dates.

"We’re excited to be able to provide this information in one central location to the public. As a transit agency, we’re always striving to find new and interesting ways to engage customers and provide them with the resources that will help them consider using public transportation," said David Eatman, Transit Administrator for Capital Area Transit (CAT).

To sign up, go to gotriangle.org/developers, create a User ID and password, enter contact information, and then review and agree to the License Agreement. Once registered, downloading updated files is as simple as typing your User ID and password.

Go Triangle will provide notification via e-mail and Real Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds when there are updates to the data so that developers can keep their applications up to date.

The GoTriangle data warehouse is the second technological upgrade online this year, following the recent addition of Google Transit. These additional resources are a part of the GoLive program that provides riders more options for making a smoother trip planning experience and easier integration into a transit-oriented lifestyle. Real-time information and digital signs will be available later this year.

GoTriangle joins Google Transit

Jan 13, 2011

Google and the GoTriangle family of services are pleased to announce that the Google Transit trip planner (www.google.com/transit) now includes all local transit schedules and routes for the Triangle region. The GoTriangle family of services include Capital Area Transit (CAT), Cary Transit (C-Tran), Chapel Hill Transit (CHT), Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA), North Carolina State University Wolfline, and Triangle Transit. The addition of GoTriangle trip planning services to Google marks the beginning of the full regional technology program, GoLive, which will also include a regional real-time system and an open-source data warehouse.

In 2003, GoTriangle launched a Transit Trip Planner at gotriangle.org so that transit riders can find a best match for their next trip. Triangle commuters can enter destination information in “from” and “to” fields from the GoTriangle.org home page. Using all of the local transit schedules, the trip planner calculates the length of time the trip will take and suggests the quickest, most efficient route. Customers can select not only transit but also a combination of biking and walking.

With Google Transit, Triangle visitors and regular transit users can now plan their trips using familiar technology while on the go with Google mobile apps, allowing for searches on smart phones such as the iPhone and Droid. By utilizing Google search, riders have more options for starting and destination points, making for a smoother trip planning experience and easier integration into a transit-oriented lifestyle.
As part of the GoTriangle’s commitment to openness and providing resources to Triangle commuters, all bus system data will be available as GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) files. These files will be available late January 2011 on GoTriangle for developers to create useful mobile phone apps.

TTA's Transit Design Game

Feb 28, 2007

Be a part of TTA's Transit Design Process! From February 16 - 28, 2007, TTA will be asking the local community for input on prioritizing future improvements to transit vehicles, bus stops, and other amenities online at www.RideTTA.org/Priorities

TTA employees will also pass out paper surveys on buses, and visit public locations such as Fayetteville St. in Raleigh, American Tobacco Campus in Durham, the Cary Train Station and Franklin St. in Chapel Hill during the week of February 19 - 23, 2007.

Using a list of improvements gathered from public input the agency has sought during the last 6 months, the online survey will focus on prioritizing these amenities within budgetary restraints. Survey respondents will be asked to "spend" a budget based on real world costs on a combination of bus shelters, bike racks, lighting, signage, alternative fuels, and other options without going over budget. The results of this survey will be used to make future prioritizations at TTA.
