Numerous improvements and additions to the RTP roads and trails are currently in progress or scheduled:

Recently Completed Projects

  • Extension of Hopson Road to Louis Stephens Drive to Highway 55
  • Installation of bus shelters at Cisco (2), Credit Suisse and NetApp (Kit Creek Road and Louis Stephens Drive)

  • RTP Mountain Biking Trails - looped mountain bike trails were recently completed along the southern edge of RTP along Louis Stephens Drive.  Kit Creek runs through the site which will be developed in two phases: Phase 1 will include 2 miles of trail and Phase 2 will add and additional 2 miles (in 2011).  Greenways Inc. and Triangle Off Road Cyclists (TORC) worked together on the design of this project and Phase 1 was completed in May of 2009.

Upcoming Projects

  • Turn lanes at NC 54 and TW Alexander Drive
  • Extension of Louis Stephens Drive (to connect with the Town of Cary’s paving of Old Maynard Road)
  • Extension of Little Drive to Highway 55
  • Widening of TW Alexander Drive between Cornwallis and Hwy 147
  • Installation of section of jogging trail from Kit Creek, behind NetApp, out on Louis Stephens Drive where it will meet with Little Drive

Future Projects

  • The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) plans to build the Triangle Parkway by 2011 to connect the Durham Freeway (NC-147) with the Western Wake Expressway (NC-540).  This 3.4-mile connection will provide commuters with direct access to many more RTP companies and form part of the Triangle Expressway running from RTP to NC-55 at Holly Springs.
